These competitions can range from casual gaming events to highly professional tournaments with substantial prize pools. In high school esports, students compete in various video games as representatives of their schools, much like traditional sports teams.

B. Growth and Popularity of High School Esports:

High school esports has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, mirroring the rise of esports on a global scale. More high schools are recognizing the value of esports as a legitimate extracurricular activity, leading to the formation of official school teams and leagues. This growth is fueled by the increasing popularity of video games and the accessibility of online gaming platforms.

C. Benefits of Participating in High School Esports:

Participating in high school esports offers numerous benefits for students:

  1. Teamwork and Communication: Esports require teamwork and coordination among team members, fostering valuable interpersonal skills.

  2. Strategic Thinking: Many esports games involve strategic planning, problem-solving, and critical thinking, which can enhance cognitive abilities.

  3. Leadership Development: Students have opportunities to develop leadership skills by taking on roles such as team captain or strategist.

  4. Community and Belonging: Esports teams provide a sense of community and belonging for students who share a passion for gaming.

  5. College and Career Opportunities: High school esports can open doors to college scholarships, career paths in the gaming industry, and related fields such as technology and marketing.

D. Overview of Different Games and Leagues:

Toombs County Bulldogs Esports focuses on four main games:

  1. Splatoon 3: A colorful and fast-paced team-based shooter where players control characters called Inklings or Octolings and compete to cover the most territory with ink.

  2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: A beloved racing game featuring characters from the Mario franchise racing against each other on colorful tracks filled with obstacles and power-ups.

  3. Rocket League: A unique combination of soccer and vehicular mayhem, where players control rocket-powered cars to score goals in a futuristic arena.

  4. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: A crossover fighting game featuring characters from various Nintendo franchises, where players battle each other to knock opponents off the stage.

These games are selected based on their suitability for high school competition and adherence to the guidelines set by the national federation of high schools. By participating in these games, students can experience the thrill of competitive gaming while representing Toombs County High School with pride.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have Fortnite, Call of Duty, Rainbow 6 Seige, Overwatch, or Apex?

Unfortunately, due to concerns about school violence, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) does not permit the playing of games such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, Rainbow 6 Siege, Overwatch, or Apex in Georgia high schools. This is a decision made by the GHSA to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. Therefore, it is not possible to play these games in high schools in Georgia.

Do you choose the games the team plays?

Coach Corley does not decide what games are offered. The games offered are determined by PlayVS, a company that provides the platform and infrastructure for high school esports leagues. Coach Corley then decides which games the Toombs County Bulldogs Esports team will play from the selection provided by PlayVS. This ensures that the team is competing in games that are appropriate and fair for high school-level competition.

Can I play Esports and Baseball, Football, Soccer, Basketball, etc.?

Esports is a varsity athletic offering at Toombs County High School and is a year-round activity. As such, it is not possible to participate in another varsity sport during the same semester in which you participate in esports.

I'm a girl. Can I play?

Esports is not a boys-only sport. Girls can also participate in varsity esports at Toombs County High School. Esports is open to all students regardless of their gender and it’s a great opportunity for everyone to showcase their skills and passion for gaming.

Do I have to meet GHSA eligibility?

All students who participate in Toombs County Bulldogs Esports must meet the eligibility requirements set by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) because esports is a varsity sports offering. This includes maintaining good academic standing, and adhering to the rules and policies set by GHSA. It is important for all students to understand that esports is a competitive sport and being eligible means that you can participate in an organized and fair game with other high schools.

Can I bring my own equipment? (Switch, Controller, Bag, Etc.?)

Esports players at Toombs County High School are encouraged, but not required, to bring their own controllers to use during competitions and practices. This can help players become more comfortable and familiar with the equipment and give them an edge in the competition. Additionally, players are encouraged to use their own Nintendo Switch if they are participating in any Nintendo titles. This can help ensure that the players are familiar and comfortable with their own devices and it also helps to avoid any potential issues with equipment malfunction or compatibility.

Do I have to attend every practice and game for the whole year?

All members of the Toombs County Bulldogs Esports team are required to attend all practices and games until the end of the season. They may not leave the team to start another varsity sport before the esports season is over. This is to ensure that the team is able to field a full roster for each match and to give the best chance of success in competition. It also shows commitment to the team and respect for the other members. It’s important for student-athletes to understand that being a part of a team means they have to fulfill their commitment to that team until the end of the season.
